Applying essential oils to the body is simple. Do not think on it too much. First, go to a quite area where you can be alone. Then, take the oil out you bought for pregnancy. Open the oil and bring it to your nose. Now, smell in the chemicals. Take it all in and let the chemicals travel by air to your brain. Let it travel to your brain and then fall down to other parts of your body. Breathe it in for 4 minutes or so. Afterwards, wait for the chemicals to take hold on your body. It will feel weird at first. Although, you’ll get use to it and notice the change in thinking.

Also, don’t be afraid to consume pregnancy oils daily. Being pregnant is alot of stress on your back. Stress can cause you to think about all sorts of bad things. 5 Essential Oils to Help with Back to School Anxiety

The new school year is upon us and in my house this is met with a mixture of excitement and anxiety. My daughter in particular struggles with anxiety when it comes to school. Who will be my teacher? Will she be nice? Will my friends be in my class? Will the bully be in my class? Will the work be too hard? And the list of questions goes on.

As a former teacher my heart aches when I hear these questions. I tried so hard to make those first few days as relaxing and welcoming as possible. In fact I would diffuse essential oils in my classroom to help manage the mood in the room. As a parent I have learned that although there are many wonderful caring teachers in the world, there are many that are not and so my anxiety level shoots up as well.

As a Bastyr trained aromatherapist I have studied the chemical constituents in essential oils and how they can affect the central nervous system. So, I go to my oils and start diffusing. I diffuse at home, in the car on the way to school, and also on the way home from school. I add a carrier oil to my oils and apply them to my kids to wear so they can smell them throughout the day, helping to keep them calm. The benefit of this is that other kids who smell them will benefit as well.

Here is 5 of my most common go to essential oils to help with school anxiety.

1.   Lavender

Lavender is one of the most well-known and used essential oils. Its scent is easily recognized and is not only floral, but sweet and fresh as well.  High in the chemical constituent Ester is has a powerful relaxing effect on the central nervous system. It helps in calming, relaxing and provides relief from restlessness, irritability, and general nervous tension. It has the ability to balance and well as enhance moods.  It can relax a person, while at the same time make them more alert.

2.   Citrus Essential Oil

Need to lift the mood in a room? Citrus oils are the way to go. Kids love the smell of citrus fruit and they are incredible in their ability to change a mood from grumpy to happy. Orange, Bergamot, Lime, Lemon, Tangerine and Yuzi are a few you can choose. The favorite in our home is “Wild Orange,” my daughter calls it the, “Happy Oil.”

3.   Cedarwood

Cedarwood is known as the “Oil of Community.” It helps those who struggle with the ability to form social bonds. It has a soothing and calming effect on the mind and body and is great for helping to relieve tension and stress. Combined with Lavender in a diffuser Cedarwood can help with sleep as well.

4.   Vetiver

Vetiver oil is comes from the root of the Vetiver plant.  It has a calming and balancing effect on the nervous system and is used in aromatherapy for reducing the effects of emotional stress, shock, panic, sleep issues, hysteria and deep sadness. Vetiver can also help calm what I like to call, “Monkey Mind” which turns off the mind to help you fall asleep.

  1. Chamomile

Chamomile is well known as a tea that helps calm and relax. As an essential oil, its wonderful calming properties can help in reducing anger, stress and nervousness. There are three different varieties I like to use, German, Roman and Cape Chamomile. Cape Chamomile is incredibly high in Esters making it a great choice to use for calming the central nervous system. I keep an empty bottle of Cape Chamomile in my car when I am driving in stressful traffic. Just inhaling from the bottle instantly calms me down.

So, in my home as we are headed back to school our diffusers are going and I am oiling up my kids. It works every year.

*It is important to note that when using essential oils to affect your mood it is best to diffuse/inhale them. This is the fastest way to reach your central nervous system. You can wear them as a perfume with a carrier oil or a cool mist diffuser. Always use a carrier oil when putting essential oils on your skin.

Why I Broke up with Leonie Dawson’s Shining Biz and Life Academy (Sad face)

My Story, My Experience

** I will do a review of The Shining Biz and Life Academy and Leonie Dawson’s Goal Setting workbooks in another post.

I discovered Leonie and her Goal Setting books several years ago through a friend. At that time the books were only in PDF form and 9.99$! This was way back in the beginning! I fell in love right away.

I loved the colors and creativity of the workbook as well as the spirt of Leonie. I loved listening to her, reading her emails and enjoyed how genuine and open she was to the world. Although the Goal Setting books took an incredible amount of ink, I bought them yearly and worked through them.

As time passed things changed, as they always do. Leonie had children and it seemed from what she shared, she was being attacked online by trolls. I ached for her as I know how it can hurt when you are an open hearted person.

Things may have changed fast or slowly, I am not sure as it didn’t really hit me full force until this year. There was the email stating that if you didn’t like how she would cuss, (a lot), then tough. She was going to be the real her and swearing came with the package.

Then there was the blocking of people who she said were trolls or didn’t like the way she did things. I understood this as it is her business and she can run it however she likes. But it scared me. I didn’t feel comfortable anymore in the online workbook FB groups or in the Academy FB group. I felt there were filled with flowers, fairies and disagreement was not allowed. (MY FEELINGS of being in the groups)

Then about 1 and half years ago Leonie offered for free her Business Goddess Course. I took it and found it very helpful for a person starting their own business. I tucked away the thought that I would eventually join the Academy and try it out. That time came last Fall when the prices were going to be raised from 497$ a year to 997$ a year.

I decided to give it a go. I loved Leonie and had learned so much from her Business Goddess Course so I would try it. (As I said before I will review the Academy in another post).

The one thing I admired about Leonie was her creativity and the fact she used her passion in Art to create a business. I also loved listening to her and her heart. Once I joined the Academy I realized that things had changed. There was lots of swearing, to the point that I had to make sure my kids were not in the room if I listened to a recording. And, sadly, I felt that Leonie had an edge to her. Maybe it was the trolls or being in the public eye, but there was a hardness that wasn’t there before.

I was sad. We all change, and we all choose how we want to show up in the world and I respect that. It was just very sad to me.

Finally, the last straw or final push for the break up was when Leonie joined an MLM.  I was scared that the Academy and newsletters would be about the MLM and enrolling etc. At first it wasn’t. Then there was the How to Run and MLM Business course in the Academy. I listened to it and when asked on the Group FB page, I gave my opinion of it. (Respectfully, I might add)

BIG MISTAKE. There was some nice discussion with other members about MLM’s. Then Leonie took offense at my review. I decided not to pursue, defend or discuss as I knew the end was in sight. So, I deleted my comments, left the group and as of September will let my Academy Membership lapse.

Then the Newsletters with invitations to watch the MLM webinars, links to buy etc. Honestly, I get these so often from other friends who sell products from MLM’s I want to scream! I felt my space invaded. I felt betrayed. (MY FEELINGS!). I had joined the Academy and followed Leonie because of her creativity and Open heart. I now felt like I had been played. It had not been made clear that MLM’s was now part of the deal. The whole atmosphere of the academy had shifted.

It was time to go. Time to break up. So I did. And it wasn’t that hard at all I discovered. I had already been filling my world with Goddess groups and creativity circles so I had what I needed.

I wish Leonie all the best in the world and much success. This was just no longer a space for me, and that’s ok.

Peace and Comfort…..PLEASE

During this time I am often wondering how to remain calm and peaceful and how to offer comfort to others. It seems like we are daily, almost hourly, being bombarded with stress and anxiety.

I personally, cling to my daily self-care rituals and have even added some to help support my mental, emotional and central nervous system. Here is what I do daily.

Quiet time – First thing in the morning I have my quiet time. I read a devotional, my Bible and journal. I also do Morning Pages. (If you have never heard of morning pages I highly recommend it, they have changed my life. Here is a link http://juliacameronlive.com/basic-tools/morning-pages/)

Yoga/Melting – I have a friend who is a yoga teacher. She comes to my house weekly and teaches yoga to some friends and myself. Stretching and breathing can help release all those negative thoughts and emotions. Melting is something I do daily on my own at home. It has been a game changer. Walking – There is nothing like a walk, especially in nature, to help clear the mind and relieve stress.

Laughing/Keeping it Light – I am picky about what I watch and read right now. I watch light and funny shows, (I am a House of Cards fan but have yet to watch this latest season.) And am reading more than ever before.  I am also hanging out more with friends and entertaining more.

Create/Art – Art and creativity are HUGE for keeping the Central Nervous System calm. It helps with anxiety and stress as well. I have started an “Art Journal.” It isn’t anything dramatic, just painting, drawing, collages etc. You don’t have to be an artist to do it, believe me!! Keeping Abreast of the REAL NEWS! – This is key. There is so much sensationalism out there and it’s hard to know what is real and what is fake. I usually only follow News sources that have journalistic integrity with Editorial oversite. I also follow Elizabeth Cronise McLaughlin. She does a daily Facebook live called, “Resistance Live.” She is a former Washington Civil Rights Lawyer and in 10 – 20 minutes a day will break down what is true and what is false in the News. Prayer and Meditation – This is something I do multiple times a day. I pray and spend time quietly meditating on what I want our world to be for my kids. I pray for guidance and hope. It is key in helping to keep calm, peaceful and receiving comfort. Link: http://how-to-meditate.org/

Nutrition/Food – Eating healthy is key in helping your body handle stress and anxiety. I have been very mindful about my eating and have eliminated grains from my diet. Essential Oils – Last but NOT least is essential oils. Diffusing and smelling essential oils can make a HUGE difference in helping your body with anxiety and stress. When you inhale essential oils they go through your olfactory bulbs to your amygdala. This is also the place that is called, “The Seat of Your Emotions.” It is also the only place in your body that is open to your central nervous system. Your sense of smell is POWERFUL in helping your brain heal and soothe your body. So what essential oils do you diffuse? Lavender, Chamomile, Melissa, Geranium, Clary Sage, Bergamot and Ylang Ylang. These are some great oils to start with.

Seasonal Allergies and Smelling Essential Oils

I have struggled for years with seasonal allergies. Until February of 2013 I was on medication for them for 9 months out of the year. In 2013 I was introduced to essential oils. It was through someone selling them and having always loved essential oils I jumped on board.

When I asked about my seasonal allergies I was told to do the following by the person who sold me the oils. Take 2 drops each of lavender, lemon, peppermint and melaleuca in water and drink it. Not knowing much about essential oils I did it. Every day for a week. And…no allergies for over two years. (Please do NOT do this! Read the rest of the story!)

At this time I also enrolled in Bastyr Natural Health College’s Aromatherapy Certificate Program. I spent the next two years studying chemistry, biology, the olfactory system and more. The more I learned the more I realized how dangerous it is to take essential oils internally especially in water! (Water and oil do NOT mix!)

Last year my allergies came back.

I was in luck because an essential oil company had made gel capsules with lavender, lemon and peppermint for just this issue. I took some…..nothing. I tried for 2 months taking them and they did not work. I did NOT understand!

So, this past year I reached out to my professor at Bastyr and asked him how it was that it worked in water but not in a gel capsule! He told me that maybe it was the smell of the oils that helped my allergies not taking them internally. When I had the oils in the water they floated on top and when I would take a drink I would inhale all the chemical constituents. Knowing how the olfactory system works this made total sense!

A New Plan with Smelling Essential Oils

So, I started an experiment. I mixed equal parts of lemon, lavender, peppermint and melaleuca into a 5ml glass bottle. Blended it and then took the cotton interior of an inhaler and soaked up the oil. I then put it into an inhaler. I have been using it for about 3 weeks now. AND IT WORKS! My daughter has one at school she swears by. I have one in the car, purse, on my desk and on my night stand. I use it a couple times a day.

One day I was outside for 2 hours without an inhaler. My allergies went wild. When I got home I began smelling the oils and slowly over about 15 minutes it went away. I was so excited!

Aromatherapy Works!

I have given inhalers to some friends of mine and asked them to report back to me on how they worked. I will update this blog post with the results. EXCITING!

So, I diffuse the four oils as well in the office when I am working. Long story short, the olfactory system is incredible in aiding the brain and body to heal!
