My Husband had Shingles
Spring 2015

I cannot tell you how many people have contacted me in the past 5 months with shingles….it is amazing how this is breaking out everywhere! At first my husband thought he had cracked a rib and went to urgent care. They told him is wasn’t cracked but sprained. (This is how it starts…pain in the rib cage area, from back to front around the side.) It was very painful.

It just so happened he had an appointment with his doctor for a physical the next day. When he told the doctor about his sprained rib the doctor said, “That is not a sprained rib that is shingles!” He gave him steroids and antiviral medication.

When Peter got home from his appointment and told me I began researching shingles online to get a clearer picture of what it is and what can be done to help.

I have received many phone calls from people looking for an oil to “fix” their shingles or stop the itching and pain. No one wanted to do the entire regiment I came up with, only a quick fix. I discovered a few things about Shingles.

1. It comes from the chicken pox virus so if you have had chicken pox you can get the Shingles virus.
2. It is WICKED nerve pain.
3. It comes during times of stress and weak immunity.

Here is a link with more information: http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/shingles/basics/definition/con-20019574

I was a bit shocked they had prescribed a steroid because steroids can actually lower your immunity and Shingles can be caused by lowered immunity????  The anti-viral I was not impressed with either. (Personal preference) So, what did we do?

This is what we did based on my research with essential oils.
Internally: 3 times a day, 1 pill

GI Cleansing Formula – this is in a pill form and contains the following; Oregano, Melaleuca, Lemon, Lemongrass, Peppermint and Thyme.

Detoxification Blend Soft gels – (note It is the soft gels not the capsules) contains; Tangerine peel, Rosemary, Geranium, Juniper berry, Cilantro.

Protection Blend Gel capsules– Wild orange, Clove, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, Rosemary, Oregano, Melissa and Black Pepper.

I chose the GI Cleansing Formula and the Protective Blend because of the Anti-Bacterial, Anti-Viral and Anti-fungal properties of the oils they contain.

I chose Detoxification Blend Soft gels because they help support the healthy function of the kidney and liver while the virus is being flushed out.

One of the hardest parts of shingles is the nerve pain and itching.
We tried several essential oils and combinations of essential oils and found the best results with the following:
Pain – Frankincense on the thumb and then applied to the roof of the mouth. 1-2 drops as needed for pain management.

Pain and Itching – Ravensara and Calophyllum mixed in equal amounts. I sprayed it on the Shingles and then used a cotton ball to catch any dripping and put back on the shingles.

Ravensara is an essential oil that I got at Original Swiss Aromatics online
Calophyllum is not an essential oil it is more like a carrier oil I got it from Original Swiss Aromatics.

Original Swiss Aromatics also sells a “Shingles” blend which you can purchase instead of the two above.

My husband’s shingles lasted about 3 weeks. The pain subsided slowly over a period of two weeks and then was just itchy. We kept coconut oil on it as it dried up to keep it moist and stop the itching more.

They key is consistency! I had my husband continue the internal pills for the entire 3 weeks. You could still see where it was after 3 weeks but it was not causing any more irritation.

I would like to note that I am not a doctor and this is not medical advice. This is just what we tried based on my education as an Aroma Therapist and research. Please consult your doctor if you contract shingles. And if someone you love contracts shingles do not touch them once they start to open and ooze as this is when it is contagious. My husbands didn’t really do this, maybe 1 or 2 of them slightly.
